How to Care for Silk: The Complete Guide

March 21, 20255 min read·By Sophie Laurent

Silk is the most luxurious of natural fibers — and with the right care, it will reward you with years of wear. Mulberry silk, the variety we use at PUJKA, is naturally hypoallergenic, temperature-regulating, and incredibly strong for its weight. Here's everything you need to know about keeping your silk pieces in perfect condition.

Washing Silk at Home

While we recommend dry cleaning for our silk dresses and skirts, light silk pieces like camisoles can be hand washed. Use cold water — never warm or hot — and a pH-neutral detergent specifically formulated for silk. Gently agitate the garment for 2-3 minutes, then rinse thoroughly in cold water. Never wring silk. Instead, lay it flat on a clean towel, roll the towel to absorb excess water, then reshape and air dry.

Storing Silk

Store silk garments in breathable garment bags or natural cotton covers — never in plastic, which traps moisture. Silk should be hung on padded hangers or folded with acid-free tissue paper. Keep away from direct sunlight, which can fade the natural lustre over time.

Removing Wrinkles

Silk responds beautifully to steam. Use a handheld steamer held 15-20cm from the fabric, or hang the garment in a steamy bathroom for a few minutes. If ironing is necessary, use the lowest heat setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and the silk.
